Malloy slams Foley on guns in new TV ad

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is further wedding himself to the cause of gun control with his latest TV ad.

Released Wednesday by Malloy’s re-election campaign, the 30-second commercial seeks to paint Republican challenger Tom Foley as beholden to the gun lobby and a threat to the sweeping firearms restrictions Connecticut lawmakers enacted in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

“Connecticut’s gun law, a bigger and bigger issue in the campaign for governor,” a female narrator tells viewers. “Tom Foley refuses to support mandatory background checks for people with mental illness, refuses to support the ban on high-capacity magazines and, if given the chance, he says he would repeal the law completely, a position that got him the endorsement of the gun lobby.”

A request for comment from Foley was left Wednesday with his campaign spokesman.

Signed into law by Malloy last year with overwhelming support in the General Assembly, Connecticut’s gun-legislation package expanded the definition of illegal assault weapons, banned gun magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition and mandated universal background checks for firearms and ammunition.

“Governor Malloy has had the courage to protect Connecticut families and say no to the gun lobby,” the commercial ends.
