Gov. Malloy, on campaign stops, offers two initiatives for elders

Malloy, in New Haven and West Haven today, offered an expansion of so-called circuit-breaker property-tax benefits and caretaker tax credits for the elderly.

“We need to do all we can to make sure seniors can afford to stay in Connecticut and with the increasing aging population in our state, we are giving tax breaks to caretakers,” Malloy said in a statement after the campaign stops. “That’s why we are proposing to increase benefits to the Circuit Breaker program that we created — we want to help seniors remain in their communities and develop a caretakers state tax credit.” He was in the Bella Vista apartments in New Haven and the Surfside Retirement Home in West Haven to propose increasing tax relief for seniors by increasing income eligibility for property tax relief to $40,900, up from the current $40,000. The plan already benefits about 40,000 people; and to create a state elderly caretaker tax credit of about 25% of the federal senior caretaker tax credit.
