With Malloy out of state, Lt. Gov. Wyman calls out Foley on domestic violence, but he won’t play ball

Lt. Gov Nancy Wyman, state Sen. Beth Bye and state Rep. Mae Flexer held a conference call with reporters this afternoon, attempting to put some pressure on Republican Tom Foley. Last week, Wyman and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced a proposal to automaticaly strip firearms from people (mostly men, let’s face it) who get slapped with temporary restraining orders, pending court hearings within two weeks. Currently, they can hold on to their weapons until at least after a court hearing. But a recent homicide of a woman in Oxford underscores the danger in which women can find themselves right after a TRO is issued. “It’s becoming all too common that people are becoming victims,” Wyman told reporters. She and the other Democrats pointed at Foley’s recent endorsement by the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, a pro-gun organization, They wanted to know whether Foley stands by the gun lobby or support taking guns out of the hands of potentially dangerous people.

Foley, speaking about an hour later with reporters in Ansonia, turned it into a non-issue. “I’ve said I support it,” Foley said of the proposal. “Is there anything unclear about that?” A reporter asked why he supported it. “Why shouldn’t I? You have to balance the rights of people who feel that they are at risk with other rights. I don’t think a two-week period is unreasonable.”
