Sun shines on Malloy in small-sample PP Poll

It’s a small sample, 861 people, from a Democratic-leaning poll operation out of Raleigh, N.C., but Public Policy Polling’s first survey of the year today pegs Gov. Dannel P. Malloy with an 8-point lead over Republican Tom Foley, 43 percent to 35 percent. Wild card independent, conservative guns-rights candidate Joe Visconti is checking in with 9 points. The sample of 861 people compares to the September 10 Quinnipiac University Poll sample of 1,300 likely voters with a 2.7 percent margin of error that found Foley, the Greenwich investor, with a 46-40 lead. It’s just about time for another Quinnipiac Poll, one would think.

“Malloy had low approval numbers throughout most of his term and that hasn’t changed- only 40% of voters approve of the job he’s doing to 50% who disapprove,” the PPP news release says. “But Foley’s numbers are even worse with just 34% of voters holding a favorable opinion of him to 49% with an unfavorable one… Malloy is actually winning more Republicans (17%) than Foley is Democrats (12%) which makes it very hard for a Republican to be successful in a state where Democrats have a substantial registration advantage.”

The poll predicts a “sweep” across the top of the ballot. “George Jepsen leads 45/30 for Attorney General, Denise Merrill is up 42/33 for Secretary of State, Denise Nappier is up 45/37 for Treasurer, and Kevin Lembo leads 38/33 for Comptroller.”
