State Democrats send out “devastating” mailer to unaffiliateds

This six-page, fold-out mailer, hammering Tom Foley on gun-control, is hitting the mailboxes of unaffiliated voters, slamming the Republican gubernatorial challenger on his use of the word “inconvenient” to describe the 2013 gun-controls reforms, including an expansion of mail2mail3mail4the ban on military-style rifles and large-capacity ammunition magazines. The first page is a white address area for the recipient, with the Democratic State Central Committee in the upper left. “Paid for by the Democratic State central Committee. Approved by Dan Malloy,” is the disclaimer below. Opening it to the first page and you see a boy with a backpack. “You wouldn’t call it an ‘inconvenience’ if your child didn’t come home from school. You’d call it devastating,” says the copy. The center of the second page is a military-style rifle, similar to the weapon used by Adam Lanza to kill 20 first graders and six adults in Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. “You wouldn’t call it an ‘inconvenience’ if a criminal used a gun because he wasn’t given a proper background check. You’d call it tragic.” Then there’s a two-page spread with Foley’s picture, an NRA logo, a brace of larger-than-life photos of bullets and a Foley for Governor poster in the background. “Endorsed by Connecticut’s gun lobby, Tom Foley said our gun laws are an ‘inconvenience’ to gun owners,” and ads an August 28 statement in which Foley said “If the legislature handed me a repeal…I would sign it…” There are a few other lines including “Tom Foley: Reckless and wrong for Connecticut.” The final page is a photo of a bullet hole in a window. “You wouldn’t call it an ‘inconvenience’ if this was your living room window. You’d call it terrifying.”
