Gubernatorial Fact Check: Foley’s 11th hour “tax relief” plan already in effect, mostly

Republican challenger Tom Foley’s newtom and heather proposal to end taxes on Social Security and teacher pension incomes, as unveiled in his final debate with Gov. Dannel P. Malloy yesterday on News8 and again on WPLR’s Chaz and AJ Show  this morning, may have been a late-breaking revelation. But in fact state tax law exempts the first $50,000 in Social Security income for singles and $60,000 for joint tax filers.

And earlier this year, the General Assembly approved a gradual phase-in of tax breaks for teacher pensions, starting with 10 percent next year and eventually growing to 50 percent.
