Foley moves to block extended voting for all of Hartford

FAIRFIELD — Republican Tom Foley says Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is trying to pull another fast one by petitioning a state Superior Court judge to keep the polls open for an additional 30 minutes in Hartford because of early voting glitches.

“There’s plenty of time for people to go back and vote if they didn’t get the opportunity,” Foley said during a last-minute campaign stop outside the Fairfield Senior Center Tuesday afternoon.

Foley said that missing voter rosters at a few Hartford precincts caused delays like the one experienced by Malloy this morning when the governor went to vote.

To extend voting for the entire city, Foley said, would be a mistake.

“Listen, the rules are the rules,” said Foley, who supports accommodating those voters who were directly impacted by the delays.

Foley said he has a team of lawyers ready to fight Malloy’s legal maneuvering.

“I don’t know why he’s doing that,” Foley said, adding that such a request erodes the public confidence in the integrity of the election system.

State Senate Minority Leader John McKinney, R-Fairfield, who lost to Foley in the August primary for governor, echoed Foley.

“I think it speaks to the rules don’t apply to Gov. Malloy,” said McKinney, who greeted Foley outside the Fairfield Senior Center.

McKinney questioned whether Malloy would go to the same lengths for Greenwich, New Canaan and Darien voters if their Metro-North train got stuck and kept them from the polls.

“My guess is governor Malloy would not be going to court and fighting for them,” McKinney said.
