A confident Gov. Dannel P. Malloy addressed a cheering crowd of supporters Wednesday morning at the Society Room in Hartford, and declared “We are going to win this thing.”

Shortly before Malloy took the stage, Democratic state chair Jonathan Harris told the crowd at party headquarters that Malloy has 413,000 votes to Foley’s 401,000, according to reporter Ken Dixon.

“Elections have consequences and those are not about what we’ve done in the last four years,” said a jubilant Malloy who hit the stage with his wife Cathy. “It’s about what we will accomplish in the next four years.”

“We had an extraordinary bunch of people who we moved into this state to help reorganize the Democratic Party,” said Malloy.

At GOP headquarters at the Hyatt in Greenwich, Foley supporters acknowledged that their candidate was headed for defeat. People at the event are shouting angrily at the screen as Malloy told his followers in Hartford he would win.

Multiple GOP sources say that Malloy leads Folley by 5,000 votes with 80 percent of votes counted in the state, which does not include all of Hartford.

“We are not actually sure we lost the race, just like he is not sure he has won the race,” said Foley at speech early Wednesday at the Hyatt Regency in Greenwich.

“We probably have lost the race but we are not going to conceded until we have confirmed so,” Foley added. “It was worth the effort.”
