On a night when Gov. Dannel P. Malloy vanquished Republican Tom Foley, you’d think Connecticut’s senior Democratic senator would have cause to celebrate.

Not only did the Democrats lose control of the U.S. Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections, but the Empire State Building observed the changing of the guard by lighting itself up in red.
Blumenthal’s father-in-law, Peter Malkin, is the New York City landmark’s largest shareholder. And he’s a registered Republican from Greenwich.
