Himes waffles: congressman harvests maple syrup

The farm-to-table congressman is at it again.

U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., who has made it a pastime brewing his own beer, canning his own pickles and going clamming with constituents, is branching out into maple syrup.

The four-term incumbent from Cos Cob tapped a row of maple trees in his backyard, posting a photo of the sap collection buckets Thursday on Twitter.

March is the height of the maple sugaring season in New England.

Himes, who has landed choice assignments on the House Financial Services Committee and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence since his 2009 arrival in Washington, dabbled in homemade maple syrup last year, too.

No word on whether it’s Grade A.

Himes’ Greenwich abode is a regular cannery row, with the congressman Tweeting photos in 2013 of garlic dills bathed in vinegar and chile de arbol.

In 2014, Himes made his own New England chowder with clams that he harvested.
