Foley: voters should be able to remove Malloy from office

If only the voters of Connecticut could have a mulligan, Republican Tom Foley says he’d relieve Gov. Dannel P. Malloy of his duties.

Foley, ending a self-imposed media blackout in his home state since last November’s election, tells FOX CT that Connecticut needs a mechanism that allows the voters to remove a sitting governor from office.

“I think it’s regrettable that Connecticut doesn’t have a recall statute,” Foley said during an appearance on “The Real Story” Sunday with Jenn Bernstein and Al Terzi. “When a candidate lies to the public or does something egregious after getting elected there’s an opportunity to recall.”

Foley is the latest Republican to accuse the Democratic incumbent of going back on his word not to raise taxes in the wake of an 11th hour budget deal between Malloy and legislative Democrats that amounts to a $1.2 billion hike over two years.

“What I’m going to say is if we did have a recall statute, and the governor was recalled, and we could have another election right now, I would definitely run,” said Foley, who was defeated by Malloy in 2010 and again in 2014.

Democrats quickly lampooned Foley’s appearance on the talk show, his first interview with a Connecticut-based media outlet in months.
