Reporters not welcome

by:

The Democrats have booted the only reporter interested in attending their convention’s Rules Committee meeting, Hearst’s Ken Dixon, when the proceedings got a bit … delicate this afternoon at the Connecticut Expo Center in Hartford.

The Democratic Party also is struggling to establish wi-fi connections for reporters and others at the hall. Not a good sign for the party’s affinity for technology.

Live Blogging the CT GOP Convention.

by:

Welcome one and all to live coverage of the Connecticut Republican Convention in Hartford. My name is Tom Lambert and I’ll be acting as an alternate delegate from Fairfield this weekend with an eye into the excitement. I’ve blogged in other capacities for the CT Post but this is my first time giving political coverage a spin. Hopefully my perspective can be used as an insight into how delegates choose who exactly will be on the ballot for primaries and eventually the election this fall.

Since I’m an alternate, I should have some freedom in taking in all that I can and relaying my experiences in the form of blog posts. So check in throughout the weekend for updates and happenings from around the Connecticut Convention Center. Also check my Twitter account for updates @TomSLambert for up to the minute reactions (exciting, right?).

In the way of background, I’m a recent college grad (as of a few weeks ago) with a degree in political science who will be heading to law school this fall. Previous political experience includes work in the Post’s editorial department as well as a Washington D.C. internship in the office of former House Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT-4) all the way back in 2007. This convention will be my first, so brace yourself for some star-struck, wide-eyed wonderment from time to time. Apologies in advance.

This convention will be exciting though from not just my point of view but for all political junkies and concerned citizens. There is no incumbent governor or senator looking for re-nomination and in fact many if not all of the races will be highly competitive. Lots of ink has been spilled and cash burned already by candidates looking to jockey for positioning so don’t expect anyone to go down without a fight. I’m confident though that despite the competitiveness of the races, a great slate of candidates will be fleshed out for the voters to elect later on.

So check back throughout the weekend for live coverage of the state GOP convention. At the very least it should provide for some good theater.

Greenberg Abandons Conventional Bid for Congress. Will Try to Petition

by:

This release just came in:

”Mark Greenberg, Republican candidate for Congress in the 5th Congressional District, announced today that he will not seek delegates for the Party’s nomination.  As previously announced he has been collecting the petition signatures necessary to qualify by the June 8th deadline.
“I have said from the beginning that I would take my message directly to the 92,000 people of the 5th District,” Greenberg said. “The decision to represent  “We the People” in Congress is too important to leave in the hands of 330 delegates to a Convention. We should let 92,000 voters make that decision, not 330 political insiders.
“My campaign is focused on the Republican primary. I bring to the table the right message and the necessary resources to win the Republican primary and go on to defeat Chris Murphy in November.  I look forward to seeing who emerges from the Republican Convention as my opponent in the August Republican primary.
“The results of recent political races around the country — the defeat of Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania and the victory by Rand Paul in Kentucky — are clarion calls from people demanding change. They are tired of the same old broken system that results in career politicians with miserable records of failed policies and more government spending.   And in states across America they are voting for change by choosing outsider candidates.
“Voters in the 5th District have a similar choice. My Republican opponents are individuals who have made government their careers – one as a career elected politician and the other as a government bureaucratic staffer.  Whichever candidate emerges victorious from the Convention, will be a career politician.
“I am not a career politician.  My career has been in the business world – not the political world – and that gives me the “real world” perspective that my opponents lack.    I pledge that I will put the people’s interests first and bring real change – and basic, common-sense business practices to Washington.
“I will run a vigorous primary campaign.  My campaign is well-organized and well-funded. Of the candidates in the Republican field, I alone can attack Chris Murphy from the position of a true outsider.  I alone have the financial resources to stand toe-to-toe with Murphy to get my message to the voters of the 5th District.”

McMahon Making Hay From Blumenthal Contretemps? Rasmussen Report Says Yes.

by:

A quick poll of 500 likely Connecticut voters yesterday by the Rasmusseun Poll now finds Attorney General Richard Blumenthal with only a nominal 3-point lead over Linda McMahon, well within the margin of error of 4.5 percent, compared to two weeks ago when he was up by 13 points. McMahon’s camp said today that it’s the result of the damaging New York Times story about his misstatements about his service with the Marine Corps Reserves during the Vietnam War.

The Associated Press today though, reported that the video of a Blumenthal when he claimed to have served in Vietnam, was preceeded, at the start of his speech, by Blumenthal saying that he served during the “era,” an important distinction that he laid out right away. They found the full video on the McMahon’s Youtube page.

Here’s the link to the poll.

Bysiewicz to withdraw from attorney general race

by:

An official with Sec. of the State Susan Bysiewicz’s campaign said late Tuesday that in light of the Supreme Court ruling, her race for attorney general has ended.”We will be withdrawing  our name for the consideration for attorney general,” said Bob Martino, a senior adviser to the Bysiewicz campaign. He added that the Supreme Court’s ruling was both “shocking” and “extremely disappointing.” “We took this action to provide clarity for the voters,” he said of the initial lawsuit that led to the eventual decision. “We did get clarity for the voters, but unfortunately it is not the clarity we were looking for. We are deeply disappointed with the decision but we will abide by the law.”As for Bysiewicz’s political future, Martino said she has received numerous phone calls from supporters asking her to continue her public service “in some capacity.” At this point however, Martino said she will take a deep breath and “see what tomorrow brings.”"As for our future plans,” he said, “we will let you know in the near future. We haven’t thought of anything other than running for attorney general at this point.”
Martino said Bysiewicz “put her heart and soul” into the race and fought hard to the end.
“We want to thank our supporters and look forward to working with them again on future endeavors,” he said.

Former New York governor endorses Tom Foley

by:

Here’s today’s release from Republican gubernatorial hopeful Tom Foley of Greenwich:

I am very happy to announce the endorsement of former New York Governor George Pataki. Governor Pataki is a very distinguished Republican with a proven record of reducing spending, cutting taxes and creating jobs while simultaneously protecting the most vulnerable New Yorkers.

With Connecticut continuing to move toward the financial precipice, we need a governor who is not part of the political process that got us in to this mess. I have the experience and can provide the leadership to cut wasteful spending and get Connecticut working again.

In his endorsement, Governor Pataki said, “as a successful businessman and Ambassador to Ireland, Tom Foley has the executive experience necessary to balance budgets, cut spending and put in place the pro-growth policies that will encourage private sector investment and job growth. Tom Foley has the right ideas, leadership and energy to lead Connecticut and I encourage everyone who cares about jobs and fiscal responsibility to support him for Governor.”

I have been visiting towns across Connecticut discussing my Plan Forward for bringing back jobs and the economy and to reduce wasteful spending in Hartford. In addition to George Pataki, we have long list of prominent Republican who are publicly supporting my candidacy. You can view the full list of them here.

As always, thank you for your support.”
