Twinkies fans rejoice.
The sugary, cream-filled cakes are set to return to store shelves across America in mid-July. And Greenwichites have one of their own to thank.
Greenwich billionaire C. Dean Metropoulos bought the iconic American snack brand this spring with intentions of bringing Twinkies back to the people. The preservative-packed treats have been absent from stores since Hostess Brands filed for bankruptcy last year on the heels of a debilitating strike from its bakers union.
Metropoulos has a history of acquiring and strengthening brands that conjure a sense of nostalgia. His eponymous, Greenwich-based firm has acquired and strengthened brands such as Chef Boyardee, Jiffy Pop and Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Call him the comeback king.
