With summer ebbing the images of summer are being shared in different mediums – some have photographs and others have paintings. Artist Josie Merck of Cos Cob who makes her summer home on Block Island is sharing her paintings in a one week show at the Aurora Gallery on Block Island that ends tomorrow, Sat., Aug. 30.
The name of Merck’s show “Natives – Invasives – Exotics” shows how rooted to landscape her art is. Two of the paintings were painted this summer on the Island: “Red Eared Deer” and “Fabulous Dragonflies and Phragmites.”
But the collection includes works Merck has created in her Cos Cob studio that fit into the concept of her Block Island show. The title of her show “Natives – Invasives – Exotics” she says was chosen as it “refers to the complicated world of natural history origins, introductions and dangers.” Hence deer, phragmites, grape run wild, etc.
