City Council Minority Leader criticizes scheduled time for post office hearing

Cross post from HatCityBLOG

The recently announced community meeting on the closure of the post office on Main Street has sparked a backlash of criticism. At issue is the time in which The United States Postal Service agreed to hold the hearing, which is set for May 4th at 5PM…an inconvenient time for most people and business owners who work during the day.

One of the most outspoken critics of the proposed closure of the post office closing has been City Council Minority Leader Tom Saadi and this afternoon, I had to chance to talk to the Councilman about his objections to the meeting’s schedule time.

@Dan Berry/Zog Bee: In light of your most recent incoherent, condescending comment(s), I think the term “juvenile” is highly appropriate…in fact, it’s dead on.

Al, you need to keep this in perspective. Danbury may loose a Post Office but it has been named a “Tree City” for 26 consecutive years. And, I’m sure you will agree that Mayor Boughton should be credited for us receiving that honor the past few years.

I understand that the liberal mind forces you to call names … “juvenile” is fine if it makes you feel better.

I cannot walk to a single service and the bus has never been seen on my street. Is that a decision I made by not living on Main St … do Main St residents pay more taxes then I do?

What is done in the PO that cannot be done at the business I noticed by the famous PALACE that has a sign stating “U S Post Office”? Or, any of the many UPS, FEDX etc. stores? You mention that you use the Main St PO … this isn’t all about you is it Al? If you drove to Bacus Ave you would be able to use the time to check if any local Republicans on the way are doing something you think is wrong and put their picture on your blog.

@Dan Berry/Zog Bee: Although your comments are for the most part juvenile, I’ll take a shot and reply.

Having a meeting during a time in which most people are at work is unfair to those who want to speak their mind. Just because you use the PO during the afternoon doesn’t mean that your free during the afternoon (i.e., people use the PO during their lunch break).

I’m sure people will write and send letters in opposition to the closing as there’s been pushback in this issue for as long as I can remember. The real issue is the PO leaving downtown…I don’t think many people would be against the PO scaling their presence on Main Street (either by finding a new location or scaling their presence in the building and renting out the unused space). It’s unfair for those who use the PO’s services to be subjected to driving all the way over to Backus Ave..especially when there is no bus service to that area (unless you expect someone to walk from the mall to the PO, which is insane).

The “NT poll” is just as relevant as the laughable questionnaire the PO did (funny how someone like myself who uses the PO on Main didn’t receive a questionnaire).

Hey Al, did you see how many downtown folks participated in the News Times poll regarding the P.O.?

  6. Dan Berry says:

If the local folks can’t get to a meeting between 1 & 5 PM how would they ever get to use the Post Office during those hours? Or, they could send a written statement to be read by Big Al. Or, Big Al could tape their statement and play it at the meeting. Or, the Chamber of Commerce could represent them. Or, the business owner could send a representative (spouce, relative). Or, the downtown businesses could close early that day and go to the meeting. Or, someone could fire up the postal workers union and they could bus folks in from Bridgeport to attend the meeting. Or, the Council Dems could just convince the Post Office to stay there. Or,….
