Another basketball court in Danbury bites the dust?

by:

Cross post from HatCityBLOG

What’s going on here. What happened to the basketball court at Eden Drive. Thursday people are playing on the courts and on Friday morning, the courts are taped off and the back boards were removed…without explanation.

There has been been ANY police activity in relation to the courts.

There has been NO problems at the courts.

There has been NO fights at the courts.

I know this because I know people who either live or work by the courts AND are in the area all day every day.

This makes no sense…where are the kids in the Eden Drive area suppose to do now?

Hopefully someone at the housing authority will answer the public’s questions…and soon!

Donovan links Elizabeth Esty to Paul Ryan

Funny how she fits in with “the crowd.”

Pointing to the similarities in Paul Ryan’s God-Awful economic philosophy and Elizabeth Esty’s Republican-Light anti-progressive budget proposal, Chris Donovan released the following statement regarding Mitt Romney’s running mate.

“Paul Ryan authored the extreme Republican plan to turn Medicare over to the health insurance companies and Social Security over to Wall Street, while giving more tax giveaways to millionaires and big oil. Democrats can win this year only if we highlight this contrast for voters and promise not to cut programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.”

“I’m the only candidate that can make that case and win in November because I am the only candidate in this race with a record of fighting for and protecting programs for seniors and children in the state House. My opponent, former Representative Elizabeth Esty, proposed a plan to cut these programs instead of asking millionaires to pay a bit more in taxes. Connecticut families deserve someone in Congress who will fight for them, not for millionaires and corporate interests.”

Roberti SuperPAC delivers body blow to Esty’s voting record in new ad

While I’m still not a huge fan of SuperPACs, this latest ad from pro-Roberti SuperPAC New Directions for America does something that neither Chris Donovan or Dan Roberti have done effectively…point out Esty’s “Republican-Light” voting record.

This exposure should had happened months ago!

REFERENCED POINTS FROM AD (most points in the ad where referenced by yours truly in several posts).

1. Biennium Budget Bill, June 26 2009 (Esty voted against the budget).

2. Hartford Courant Capitol Watch, June 26 2009: House Approves Two-Year Budget That Rell Is Expected to Veto (Esty voted against the budget).

The budget restores funding for food vouchers for poor senior citizens, provides nursing-home funding at a time when 11 nursing homes are in foreclosure or bankruptcy, restores funding for the ConnPACE prescription-drug subsidy program, as well as providing money for elderly housing and homelessness services. The Democrats also restored money for teen-pregnancy prevention and an early-intervention program for children at risk, as well as youth service bureaus that help children after school. The measure also restores $6 million in funding in each of two years for family resource centers that Rell had proposed eliminating, as well as providing money for the Children’s Trust Fund.

3. Office of Fiscal Analysis on Esty’s “Republican-Light” alternative budget, Aug. 7 2009 and Aug 19 2009

4. Hartford Courant, Oct 15 2011: Elizabeth Esty’s Donations Are Within The Law, But …

Elizabeth Esty would be doing her husband a big favor if she didn’t take campaign contributions from utility executives.

The perception of conflict of interest is simply too strong and potentially damaging. That Ms. Esty didn’t realize that such contributions could pose an ethical problem is surprising.

Ms. Esty is running for the Democratic nomination for the 5th District congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy. Recently, she reported campaign contributions totaling $2,000 on June 29 and 30 from four executives of Northeast Utilities. She should return the contributions.

and as a bonus…

5. Hartford Courant, October 08, 2011: NU Execs Gave To Campaign Of Esty’s Wife.

With controversy already enveloping the $205,000 in consulting work that Daniel C. Esty did for Northeast Utilities before he became commissioner of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, it turns out that NU executives also have contributed to the congressional campaign of Esty’s wife, Democrat Elizabeth Esty, public records show.

Why should it matter that four NU executives gave a total of $2,000 on June 29 and 30 to Elizabeth Esty’s effort to win her party’s nomination in the 5th Congressional District?

It matters because corporate executives could be “seeking favor” from an official whose agency regulates them — as Esty’s does — by giving campaign contributions to his wife, said Sheila Krumholz, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Responsive Politics.

The executives might hope that either the regulator or his wife — if she is elected to Congress — “might view their agenda in a more favorable light,” said Krumholz, whose non-profit groups monitors money in politics. Donations don’t necessarily mean executives are trying to influence a public official, but they bear watching to be sure official actions aren’t influenced, she said.

In the case of Daniel Esty, Krumholz said, “his office should be mindful of the potential for conflicts of interest, or the appearance of a conflict,” that might arise from someone who is regulated by Esty’s agency giving money to his wife’s campaign.

GUEST POST: “No More Mr. Nice HealthBridge”

by:

The following guest post regarding the strike against HealthBridge Management is from Deborah Chernoff, Communications Director for the New England Health Care Employees Union, District 1199 (SEIU Healthcare). -Al Robinson.

It’s not clear what exactly the tipping point was.

Maybe it was the outpouring of support for striking HealthBridge nursing home workers from residents’ family members and the surrounding community. It could have been the high-profile media attention HealthBridge’s record of lawbreaking to get its way was receiving.

Or perhaps it was Governor Malloy walking the picket line and standing with the caregivers that the 1% owners of HealthBridge would rather stand on.

Who knows?

But something got under the skin of the corporate strategists at HealthBridge. And when they realized that their scheme to transfer millions of dollars out of the pockets of Connecticut families and into their own bank accounts wasn’t going according to plan, it was time to shift into a new mode: Attack and accuse.

They are now attempting to divert attention away from their own crimes by accusing caregivers of sabotage – as if people who have given their lives to caring for the residents in their nursing homes would suddenly choose to endanger them. Here’s how workers reacted when they learned about the accusations from a Hartford Courant reporter:

On Wednesday, health care workers walking the picket line outside the Newington nursing home — one of five in Connecticut targeted by the 700 strikers — learned of the allegations. They were so indignant that they talked over each other, as rain clouds burst and small hail pelted them.

“That’s ridiculous!” said Yolanda Amos, a nursing aide.

“We would never sabotage our residents,” said Elaine Ewart.

“They’re our family,” Amos agreed.[…]

Several union members in Newington were so disbelieving of the accusations that they speculated that the managers staged the sabotage to make the union look bad.

Don’t buy that HealthBridge has other motives for these accusations? Consider that HealthBridge waited to release the accusations until two whole weeks after the events allegedly occurred. Despite repeated requests for comment on dozens of stories since the strike began on July 3, the company officials said nothing.

Apparently, HealthBridge forgot it had filed police reports until a post magically surfaced on a right-wing blog on Monday. This was followed a few days later by a HealthBridge press release which was a heavily-politicized statement blasting not the alleged saboteurs but the Governor’s administration and other elected officials who offered their support to workers.

According to the police report, there is no camera footage to review. And only the regular caregivers, their strike replacements and HealthBridge supervisors had access to the equipment and materials that night before the strike began. The investigations are ongoing, and no one knows what the outcome will be. Despite the sensational headlines and disingenuous outrage churning in right-wing blogs, these accusations remain just that.

Let’s be clear.

The allegations are surfacing now because, in the eyes of HealthBridge’s owners, these workers are guilty of a much graver offense: daring to stand up to its larger economic agenda.

Because of this, HealthBridge, its right-wing enablers, and 1% apologists everywhere would love to discredit all of those on the picket lines, whether they are direct caregivers or those who support them. HealthBridge is carefully calculating ways to try and divert attention away from the very real costs of its relentless pursuit of greater-and-greater profits:

  • More than 700 residents are now receiving care from complete strangers, after HealthBridge illegally forced caregivers to strike if they were unwilling to agree to its agenda of economic misery for the 99% and riches for the 1%.
  • More than 600 caregivers remain out of a job while HealthBridge orchestrates its largest and most vicious campaign yet to destroy their union and break their will to fight to preserve quality resident care and good jobs for Connecticut’s healthcare workers.

HealthBridge has told workers their hopes to maintain a decent standard of living are simply not “realistic”. Meanwhile, HealthBridge principals. Meanwhile, HealthBridge is reporting annual profits of around $45.4 million from its New Jersey headquarters in 2010.

And HealthBridge principal, brothers Daniel and Moshael Straus, their subsidiaries and related companies were paid a whopping $234 million from HealthBridge coffers in the same year.

As the strike continues, we can expect to see more diversions and distractions by HealthBridge to try and demonize those who stand up to their greed and expose the company’s long history of unlawful actions. The public can now expect to see a whole new side of HealthBridge—one that its workers and residents are all too familiar with and one that will stop at nothing to get what it wants.

The anatomy of a hypocrite (starring Lisa Wilson-Phoney)

Lisa Wilson-Phoney 2010.

As an entrepreneur, I see the new health care law as an opportunity to create jobs, in medical technology, robotics and telehealth.

Lisa Wilson-Phoney email to supporters 07.19.12.

As someone who has spent their life as a health care professional I know first-hand that Obamacare is bad medicine for our health care system.

Maybe I’m being a tad too harsh…it’s not like Wilson-Phoney has a long history of political contributions to Democratic candidates or Democratic PACs that supported health care reform.

BREAKING NEWS: MAYOR BEING SUED BY HIS FORMER EXECUTIVE SECRETARY!

by:

Cross post from HatCityBLOG

Look like someone’s skeletons are about to be revealed.

It looks like the chickens have finally come home to roost…and this is DEFINITELY not good news for the mayor and others at City Hall.

If this lawsuit doesn’t end in a settlement, and if the allegations in the complaint are proven to be true, then it’s fair to say that Boughton’s political career is in SERIOUS jeopardy…if not finished.
