I cannot speak for the event, but as a high school history teacher I can comment on the educational aspect of her speech. First of all it is deplorable that the schools in Connecticut are cutting out Pre-Reconstruction history. The exclusion of issues like slavery or the development of mass democracy (to name just a few)are vital components of study that help develop a base of knowledge regarding the past that serve to develop informed citizens. Do you think these issues fail to bear relevance to todays world? Second of all, there is so much intersection between literature and U.S. history that there is no way to fully separate the two. There is a reason why one of the more highly regarded programs (AP US History) has numerous questions on the examination regarding literature. Lastly, there is nothing to suggest that "Deb" is teaching her version of history. As a teacher you strive to develop independent thinkers, but first you must have a base of knowledge in order to do so.

Thanks for covering my vote in your blog and for including the video link!

Just to clear something up, I did join ALEC my first term, like many other legislators have. When the movement started to vilify the organization, I decided it really wasn’t worth the effort to defend it, especially since I didn’t get much out of it and never went to any of the conferences anyway. I made a commitment to one of my constituents that I would not renew my membership, so I didn’t join this term.

I never had an opportunity to look at the clip until now.

The task force was set up to be bipartisan and to develop solutions that influence gun violence, mental health, and school safety. The working groups were not like any working group I have ever seen! The clip you include in the blog contains my comments moments after I learned the gun violence prevention working group was really a rubber stamp to give legitimacy to a whole host of concepts that had never been discussed by members of the group. This took place at the second and final meeting of the entire group – that’s right. One meeting to tell the press we legislators would have this amazing bipartisan effort to help our state, and another where we presented a list of concepts. We never even met as an entire group to have any discussion.

I had just sat down with a list that I thought was being passed back and forth and negotiated between the members of the group. I thought our meeting would be our opportunity to discuss the concepts in a public forum. Instead, I was handed an additional list of concepts labeled the Democrat Caucus Proposals and the co-chairs presented both lists as concepts for consideration by the leaders of the task force with no discussion. I felt like I was ambushed! So, like any other bill, the Democratic Leadership would drive the bill. While that is their prerogative as the majority, it should have been made clear from the start.

I was disappointed the working group or task force would not be presenting a single set of bipartisan recommendations that would lead to a true bipartisan bill, or bills, that could have a public hearing and the chance for a unanimous vote. I hoped for a real first start to address gun violence, to be followed by bills that were already moving through the Public Safety Committee addressing more controversial issues.

Unfortunately, the political reality was nothing short of banning guns would be acceptable by the Democrats. The controversial debate didn’t leave room for some other great concepts. At the end of the day, I think there were not enough votes to get a ban on more guns, so it had to be combined with all of the other concepts to pass the legislature. That’s politics.

Thanks again for putting the clip out there! I look forward to addressing the issues and discussing my vote in the future.

I have a hydrant in my yard and I have dug it out every time the plow goes by. I have done this for over 40 years. I, like many of the people who have submitted comments on this, have back and shoulder problems. In the 40 plus years I have done this, only 2 times has any of my neighbors ever lifted a finger to help. Both times (same neighbor) they only helped because I asked them to because my back was so bad that I could not even finish my own driveway that day. All of my neighbors have snowblowers (I just have a shovel ) and for the most part, are too lazy to even clear the snow from their own driveways, let alone help to do what would perhaps save their own home. All of this is annoying but the worst part is that two of my neighbors have frequent parties and do nothing to ensure that their company does not park in front of the hydrant. The only ticket that has ever been issued to anyone was to me, for the one time that I parked on the street between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. ( which is illegal in my city but I did beat the ticket in court) on a night when my car broke down in front of my own house. I was not parked in front of the hydrant, but simply on the street. The name given to this law is call a "snowbird" law which I found amusing since it was August when this happened. My point to all of this ( beside a venue to take my little pet peeves out for a stroll ) is that I will continue to shovel out the hydrant every time the plow goes by because it could just as easily be my home that is in need of the use of that hydrant. And because it is simply the right thing to do. I do not expect the government to unblock every hydrant every time it snows. That would be a colossal waste of my tax dollars. I want my neighbors to know that they are welcome to come on over and help clear the snow any time the mood strikes them. Come on over and say hello. Bring a shovel . If you don't have one, I can help you out with that. I don't know for sure but I do not think the responsibility is only that of the homeowner who's yard the hydrant is in, but of everyone who could benefit from its use. Besides, do you realy want me muttering to myself " I hope it's YOUR house that my efforts ALMOST saves " with every shovelful of snow? You people know who you are. Come on, many hands make light work, be a good neighbor and lend a hand.
