I received an email Sunday regarding an exciting upcoming race in Bridgeport. The inaugural Beardsley Beast 5K fundraiser will benefit The Esiason Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis and the Bridgeport Field of Dreams Foundation. This 5K run is for all ages and is a combination road and cross country race entirely inside Bridgeport’s Beardsley Park. The race is set for Saturday, May 4 at 9 a.m. with a 1/4 mile Kids Fun Run at 8:30 a.m.
The Bridgeport Field of Dreams Foundation is working hard to improve the opportunities for student athletes in Bridgeport and the idea to reach out to young student athletes is needed in Bridgeport.
A statement from the foundation reads as follows: We here at the Bridgeport Field of Dreams Foundation want to give our student athletes equal opportunities on the athletic field as well as in the classroom. Track & Field is a non-cut sport that is fun, gets kids in shape and builds self esteem. Financial times are tough for everyone today, we understand that But we are so excited about the positive impact this will have on our student athletes, we hope you will join in our enthusiasm and become a donor or sponsor. There are several ways for you to contribute and make an impact.
The Bridgeport High Schools have been hit hard by financial cuts to athletic departments and many of the high school programs have been overmatched for years competing in the FCIAC. One of the goals by the foundation is to start building up young athletes so they will want to continue playing at the high school level and to help those that are already in high school. I will be talking to some of the organizers soon so make sure you keep checking the blog and also my Sunday column in the newspaper.
