SIGN PETITION FOR GREENWICH BOARD OF SELECTMEN TO JOIN MAYORS AGAINST ILLEGAL GUNS

|

The Greenwich Council Against Gun Violence is the voice of our community in the effort to reduce gun violence. Recently, Council representatives hand-delivered a letter to Congress signed by 140 Greenwich residents in support of national legislation that addresses gun violence.

This Saturday and Sunday, July 13 and 14, during the Greenwich Sidewalk Sales, the Council will be distributing literature on gun violence prevention. They will also be collecting signatures on a petition that calls upon the Greenwich Board of Selectmen to join with Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG). MAIG is a bipartisan national coalition of mayors who are working to make America’s communities safer by keeping illegal guns out of dangerous hands.

Greenwich residents can sign the petition (see below for petition wording) by stopping at the Council table during the Sidewalk Sales on Saturday and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., or on Facebook at facebook.com/GreenwichCouncilAgainstGunViolence. The Council table will be in front of the park near 278 Greenwich Avenue.

Council spokesperson Jonathan Perloe points out that the Sandy Hook shootings that took the lives of 26 students and educators happened in a community much like ours. Perloe says that Council members feel a moral obligation to demonstrate their solidarity with Newtown. Joining MAIG is a way for Greenwich to demonstrate that the “Connecticut effect” will not go away.

Thanks to Jonathan Perloe, Dan Edelstein, and Kelly Bridges for their work on this petition and this weekend event. Hope you’ll show your support by signing the petition.

HERE’S THE PETITION – IF YOU AGREE, PLEASE STOP BY THE GREENWICH COUNCIL AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE TABLE DURING THE SIDEWALK SALES DAYS, SATURDAY JULY 13 AND SUNDAY JULY 14, 11 A.M. TO 3 P.M., IN FRONT OF THE PARK BELOW 278 GREENWICH AVENUE

Petition for Greenwich Board of Selectman to Join Mayors Against Illegal Guns

Whereas, a substantial majority of Connecticut voters, across party lines, support common-‐sense gun regulation1:

  • 93 percent support universal background checks, including 89 percent among voters in households with guns
  • 72 percent back registration of all handguns, with annual renewal
  • 63 percent, including 50 percent among gun owners, favor limiting handgun purchases to one per monthWhereas, the Sandy Hook shooting that took the lives of 26 children and educators occurred in a community much like ours, and we feel a moral obligation to demonstrate our solidarity with Newtown;Whereas, 18 mayors of Connecticut cities and towns—including those of Stamford and Norwalk—have already joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the bipartisan coalition of mayors working to make America’s communities safer by keeping illegal guns out of dangerous hands;Whereas, even Greenwich is not immune from the threat of gun violence, considering that:
  • Greenwich High School was locked down in May when a student claimed he brought a gun to school
  • Shots were fired in a drive-‐by shooting on Indian Field Road last yearWe, the undersigned, therefore call on the Greenwich Board of Selectman to join and support the efforts of Mayors Against Illegal Guns by signing and returning its Statement of Principles which outlines policy measures that will reduce death and injury caused by illegal guns.1 Quinnipiac University Poll, March 6, 2013

AND HERE’S THE MAYORS AGAINST ILLEGAL GUNS STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES

STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES

Whereas: 30,000 Americans across the country are killed every year as a result of gun violence, destroying families and communities in big cities and small towns; and

Whereas: As Mayors, we are duty-bound to do everything in our power to protect our residents, especially our children, from harm and there is no greater threat to public safety than the threat of illegal guns;

Now, therefore, we resolve to work together to find innovative new ways to advance the following principles:

o Punish – to the maximum extent of the law – criminals who possess, use, and traffic in illegal guns.

o Target and hold accountable irresponsible gun dealers who break the law by knowingly selling guns to straw purchasers.

o Oppose all federal efforts to restrict cities’ right to access, use, and share trace data that is so essential to effective enforcement, or to interfere with the ability of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to combat illegal gun trafficking.

o Keep lethal, military-style weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines off our streets.

o Work to develop and use technologies that aid in the detection and tracing of illegal guns.

o Support all local, state, and federal legislation that targets illegal guns; coordinate legislative, enforcement, and litigation strategies; and share information and best practices.

o Invite other cities to join us in this new national effort.
