Floundering in Philadelphia

Thank goodness the Mets have an off day tomorrow. What else is there to say? They were exposed this weekend by a superior Phillies team at the plate, on the mound and in the field.

With so many key players out, it’s obvious that David Wright has to carry the offense. When he’s running red hot, that’s fine; there will always be hits here and there from other players, and that’s enough to make a functional offense. But when Wright is in one of his awful slumps like he is now, the offense grinds to a halt. The Mets scored a total of three runs this weekend.

When things are looking bad, I usually try to offer some hope by taking a positive out of the last few days — but there’s really nothing good to say about this past series. The only thing that should stop us from compelte dispair is the fact that the Phillies have their own problems, and aren’t likely to run away with the division. As bad as you feel right now, as bad as the Mets have looked, they’re only 4 games out and will be getting players back in the coming weeks. It isn’t over yet: it just feels like it is.
