New Canaan Summer Theatre Presents My Fair Lady

|

Jazmin Gorsline as Eliza Doolittle and the Cockneys

It’s the final weeks of the Broadway classic My Fair Lady, hailed as one of the richest and most intelligent romantic musical comedies ever produced, featured in the mainstage season of the Summer Theatre of New Canaan (STONC) 2012 Theatre Festival in Waveny Park.

All remaining performances of My Fair Lady are scheduled on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 3pm thru Saturday, July 7.

Derived from George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady, features book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner with music by Frederick Loewe and tells the story of the over-confident Professor Higgins and his experiment to transform Eliza, a cockney girl, into a proper-speaking lady. It opened on Broadway in 1956 and won 6 Tony Awards including “Best Musical.”

It’s easy to argue that My Fair Lady is considered the standard by which all other musicals are measured. To many, the dialogue and music are brilliant and a near-perfect combination of well-honed wit and barbed satire with a remarkable blend of eloquence, melody, intelligence and heart. The New York Times hailed My Fair Lady as “One of the best musicals of the (20th) century.”
