Light Bulb Technology is Progressing at the Speed of Light

by:

Light bulb technology is changing almost as fast as the speed of light.

Just like the Moore’s Law, which says computer performance doubles every 18 months, light bulbs have Haitz’ Law, Brian Clark Howard said.

Howard wrote Green Lighting, and said the cover of his book was designed very last minute. As he was ready to publish in the book, new LED technology started coming out for bulbs. He didn’t want to put a CFL bulb on the cover because it will soon be outdated like old-school filament bulbs. But he had trouble even getting a high resolution image of an LED bulb because it was so new.

LED bulbs are artifically expensive right now, Howard said, but once they enter mass production, they will only be $2 or $3 each in a couple years.

LED bulbs last 50,000 hours and cost about $20.

I hope Howard is right that once LED bulbs are mass produced, they will come down significantly in price. There will be a greater demand for the product once the price drops. Even though the initial cost of LED bulbs seems high, it will be offset by the energy saving incurred and the long lifetime of the bulbs (longer life means that you will have to replace the bulbs much less frequently). I have only worked with Sharp for a short time, but I have always been happy with the quality of products that they have to offer. If you are in the marked for lighting, I recommend you check out their LED bulbs
