Snow Zone

Snow Zone

Short descriptive tagline

We’re off … slowly … to a new season

Welcome the SnowZone snowsports blog!
For years I’ve written about snowsports with a weekly column and frequent stories on some of the best ski areas in the East, the West, Canada, even Europe.

But this year I wanted to try something different to provide more timely information on what’s happening with skiing and snowboarding in New England. Along with frequent updates, I’ll also be posting video and lots of links to help you find the best snow conditions and the best ticket deals. If you missed last week’s story on the best prices, click here.

Unfortunately, there’s very little skiing and snowboarding in New England. Walk outside today and you’ll know the reason why. The only players now are Killington in Vermont with just four miles of skiing on 13 trails; not worth the $49 for a lift ticket or the drive. Bretton Woods in New Hampshire with four trails and Sunday River in Maine with eight. All are reporting “variable conditions,” read that as don’t bother.
Yeah, I know it’s still early, but the ski/snowboard season has been a big disappointment so far. It showed some promising signs in November when northern New England areas fired up the snow guns and opened a few trails.
It was the first Thanksgiving in years without some kind of skiing in New England with all areas having to push back their opening dates.
The warm weather has forced Okemo in Vermont to postpone its Cares and Shares day to Sunday, Dec. 13. Donate three non-perishable food items, a new child’s toy or new clothing item and you can buy a lift ticket for only $25.

Check back Friday for an update. Hint: things are looking up.
