Snow Zone

Snow Zone

Short descriptive tagline

Snowboard or ski close to home

Yes, the snow conditions look real tempting in northern New England this weekend, but unfortunately for many … holiday plans and commitments will get in the way of making that trip.

So why not spend a free hours on Connecticut’s ski slopes this weekend for some quick, close to home turns? And if we’re lucky, say our prayers and be good, we could get some significant snow in the state.

At the top of the list is Mohawk Mountain in Cornwall, the state’s largest and oldest (opened in 1947) ski area. Except for a newer lift and the fashion changes in ski wear, the postcard above, (circa 1960s … hey is that Beaver Cleaver wearing the red jacket?) that’s pretty much the way Mohawk looks today from the top of the Mohawk trail.Mohawk

This Saturday, Mohawk is offering all first time skiers and snowboarders a chance to learn the winter sport (drum roll please) … free of charge.

The learning area is on the lower part of the mountain; the gentle slope is seen in the right photo, behind the sign.

Here’s the skinny on the free offer …

What you Need: yourself and winter apparel to stay warm. Hint if you don’t have a pair of water repellent snow pants, make sure you bring an extra pair or pants and underwear to change into after you’re done.

Time of Lesson: Adults (ages 14  and older) – 9:30am, 11:00am, or 1:30pm and juniors ( age 6 to 13 years old) – 10:00am and 1:00pm  The lesson start promptly at those times. Mohawk encourages giving yourself ample time at least 45 minutes prior to the lesson so that you are outside on time.

Tickets, Rentals, and Lesson- The program is free but there are some things you need to know. The ticket is a beginner ticket only and there are no upgrades and if you are a first timer than you will be happy with this ticket. Rentals are included. Rentals include skis, boots, and poles or boots and snowboard. The helmet is not included and it is $10  if you choose. A Rental agreement forms will need to be filled out for all who would like to participate. Parents will be needed to sign the form. Collateral (driver license or credit card imprint) will be taken at the register so that equipment is returned. Lessons are an hour and half for the adult sessions and two hours for the junior sessions.  Juniors will be in the snowhawk program especially for children.

Other Questions: Borrowing equipment does not help the process. They can help all who want to learn and want to properly fit all individuals so that you can learn without hassles. Use the offer if you are a first timer, the lesson is for never tried skiing and snowboard lesson. A participant will not be accommodated if they need an advanced lesson. The day is so that all can try a new winter sport without spending money on something they might not like.

Ski Sundown in New Hartford is one of the state’s prettiest areas with thick stands of trees and winding trails. It also has Gunbarrel, the state’s steepest. On Friday, they’ll have the Canyon Run, Exhibition, Nor’easter, Stinger, Temptor and Little Joe trails open. On Saturday the rest of Sunnyside Learning Area plus Tom’s Treat, Over Easy, Papoose and Panhandle will be ready. They are shooting for everything to be open Monday. Lowest ticket prices are at night: $34.

Mount Southington will also be open, but no word yet on the number of trails that will be open. Go to its Web site to print out a coupon that will give you eight hours of skiing/snowboarding for $40 adults, $32 juniors. Night tickets are a better deal at 30 bucks.

Woodbury has been open for weeks. Cheapest ticket is $30 for two hours (more than enough) and $29 for night riding.
