A man was arrested early Sunday morning for getting into a drunken brawl and smashing a beer bottle over another man’s head, police said.

Norberto Najera, 44, of 33 Stephen St., Stamford, was charged Sunday morning with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct and held in lieu of a $2,500 bond.

Sgt. Kelly Connelly said police officers were called to a fight at 33 Stephen Street just before 5 a.m. Sunday. When they got there they found a 26-year-old man with a large cut on his forehead and blood all over his face and clothes.

The man, who was extremely intoxicated, told responding police officers that a man living in the basement hit him over the head with a beer bottle for no apparent reason. The man led police to the basement apartment where Najera was living.

Najera told police that the man was fighting with his brother and he was trying to protect his sibling when he crowned the man with the bottle, Connelly said.

Connelly said the assault victim was so drunk at the time, police were unable to get many details of the assault from him.
