Police identify suspect in Stamford murder

Update – Thursday, Aug. 28, 11:50 a.m.: The suspect in the stabbing death of Mahomed Kamal, 47, has been identified by police as Shota Mekoshvili, 29, a citizen of the Republic of Georgia.

He was caught by Stamford police after a foot pursuit through the downtown dinner crowd on Bedford Street just after 8 p.m. Wednesday, leaving restaurant patrons at the sidewalk tables wondering what was going on.

Stamford Police are investigating the stabbing death of a Stamford Taxi company driver found dead Wednesday morning inside his car on Doolittle Road with multiple wounds, Stamford Police Chief Jon Fontneau said.

Fontneau declined to identify the victim who appears to be in his 40s pending notification of his next of kin.

“Right now we’re working at a feverish pace and brought search dogs in to comb the area,” Fontneau said.

Police responded shortly before 9 a.m. to find the victim dead in his taxi vehicle with multiple stab wounds.

“It appears there was a struggle and that this could be a potential robbery,” Fontneau said.
