Hi everyone,
One of the great things about working in downtown Danbury is the variety of lunch places in the area.
To be sure, there’s no shortage of excellent local restaurants. Some of my favorites are listed below.
Please keep in mind this list is only a starting point. It’s not meant as a comprehensive list by any means.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun!
So what are your favorite lunch places? What restaurants am I leaving off?
To me, if you want a great sandwich, E&B Deli and Nico’s, at opposite ends of Main Street, are good bets, along with plenty of others.
In the mood for a hot dog? Check out JK’s on South Street, or Tony Candullo’s cart on Main Street near Kennedy Park, although he’s on vacation this month!
Ready to give Ecuadorean cuisine a try? Head over to Mitad Del Mundo on West Street, across from the library.
Are you craving Chinese food? Main Moon and Good Taste, both on Main Street, have great lunch specials.
According to my colleague, Jackie Pereira, Terra Brasilis at 58 Main St. is the place to go for Brazilian food.
Who else serves up great lunch food?

Milano’s Deli on Mill Plain has fabulous sandwiches. The bread is outstanding!

Great Mexican fare at El Ranchero…authentic, fresh, not “canned” and always a pleasant, and courteous staff. It’s just around the corner from Main St. on White St.
Also K&N Grill a bit farther down on White St. before Dunkin Donuts, nice food, nice folks and some interesting Middle eastern-Brazilian combos.
And a new South African take out place on White St, between the two!
Danbury is a great place for wonderful tastes!!!

Pancho’s Tacos, across from the courthouse.
Elmer’s Diner- good food, clean place, big portions, friendly service.

You can’t beat the Alley Way Diner on Ives Street. Fun folks, great food. Always something innovative on specials. A Johnson & Wales trained chef runs the place. He has a policy to keeping prices low – dont wuote me but I think everything on the menu is under $10.

Just a hop and a skip off Main Street, Sesame Seed offers a variety of Middle Eastern lunch dishes (and their house salad, which is fabulously zesty!). The fantastic atmosphere makes for a fun dining experience.

amigos deli price is right, great service

JK’s on South Street – home of the “Original Texas Hot Weiner” is the best for lunch. The Alley Way Diner is a good bet and I agree Nico’s is a good choice, too. If you’re leaving CityCenter then Hanna’s Middle Eastern on Lake Avenue is worth the trip.

Royal Fish and Chips (and Chicken) down from the Police Station is awesome. Very fast. Not too greasy. Very fresh, reminds me of my time in Dalton, GA. Friendly service.
I miss the Taco Ranch which was on North Street 20+ years ago, but Panchos Tacos is very good and maybe the best Mexican food in the area. I enjoy it every time I go to court – it’s right across the street from the courthouse.
We could use a Waffle House around here though.
Just my opinion, thanks!

The Sesame Seed is a favorite. My family and I go there every time we come into Danbury to visit the in-laws.
Although their ambience, clientele, and dining fare were quite similar, and they shared the same building, two wonderful establishments, Caio and The Uptowner, were simply terrific in their day. I miss them both!

Vivienne’s on Tamarack for an awesome flaffel or chicken kabob sandwich! Vivienne is very nice and the food comes out quickly to go. Her Hummus, toubulli and stuffed grape leaves are the best around.

not to critize those who like Pancho’s Tacos but El Ranchero is so much better! Take 5 minutes and go up the road. You wont be sorry

The Bruiser Burger at The Alleyway Diner is a current obsession.
The best roast beef sandwich in town is at the beginning of Federal Road at Karl Ehmer Deli; the real stuff, rare and sliced thin.

Royal Guard Fish ‘n Chips & More – definitely go for the “& More”. The fish is chips are good – but go for the wonderful curries, tiki masalas, and the best naan around!

JK’s is best, but I agree with getting a Waffle House!

El Ranchero is definitely the best for authentic Mexican cuisine. Nice size portions and VERY reasonably priced! If you decide to go there, I would recommend trying the Burrito Sabinas with an ice cold Corona…. yummmm!!

The Windmill Diner on Mill Plain for some great, fresh, homemade meals and sandwiches is my favorite!
Comment by Kathy — February 12th, 2010 @ 5:31 pm
El Ranchero on White Street is truly authentic Mexican food. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was great.
Unfortunately I did not get a good taste at Panchos Tacos — because even though we ordered vegetarian food, the food came drizzled in meat sauce.
Comment by Melissa Bruen — February 12th, 2010 @ 5:36 pm
is this name every food establishment in Danbury? or try and tell folks where some good eats are…
Windmill dinner?? Please.. Bagelman… cmon!!
Danbury has a lot of places to eat, but none are ” must have” or ” top 10″ quality… Between the food police making everyone change their cooking oil to fat free, and the city getting invaded by illegals, it makes it very hard to find a truly great place to eat here. Any taco/Mexican joint is gonna be low end here.. since the city is filled with illegals from south of Texas .. every place is a Mexican restaurant.
I’d have to go with JK’s for being the best place to eat still..
Otherwise go to Bethel the Sycamore and have more illegals make you a great burger.. On the other side of the boarder in Brookfield.. You can hit Maggie McFlys and have a great meal there…
Otherwise nothing else is that outstanding here anymore…

Spasi’s has amazing Italian Food but my favorite lunch place around would have to be Biksbee’s in Bethel.

how is it that you are all missing the best place in town – the trellis on north street!! always good – great soups – great desserts… everything made there…

AUGIE’s RESTAURANT BY FAR IS THE BEST!
Comment by Common Sense — March 4th, 2010 @ 5:43 am
I don’t know about anyone else, but I grew up in Detroit with Coney dogs. They’re definitely the best in my opinion!
Comment by Michael — April 5th, 2010 @ 3:51 am
I left my heart and my appetite at Rosy Tomorrows
Comment by Diane — April 7th, 2010 @ 5:13 pm
Maggie McFly’s? The food there is TERRIBLE!! Augie’s Numero #1 is great cheap Italian and Pancho’s Taco’s is AWESOME!
Comment by k — April 7th, 2010 @ 7:35 pm
yes, Maggie McFly’s..although not in Downtown Danbury…always good and huge selection. So..back to Downtown Danbury, let’s see…who has real NY Pizza?
Comment by lori — April 7th, 2010 @ 11:06 pm
In it’s day, Mr & Mrs Q had great burgers. The Mutt Hut near Bowlarame was also very good. And who remembers the Taco Ranch? I must say, I’m tired of Albanian and Lebanese guys running Italian restaurants, pretending to be Italian.
Nick’s is the best – bar none. You can also get a decent meal at Old Heidelberg for less money than you think.

My favorite lunch spot when I visit is Pho Vietnam. Perfect on a rainy day although The Alleyway Diner won my heart over too with their roast beef sandwich!
