Hi everyone,
I saw a great jazz show in Newtown on Wednesday night. There were four bands on stage: one from Reed Intermediate School, one from Newtown Middle School, one from Newtown High School and a military dixieland band.
It wasn’t that long ago that my oldest son, Mike, played alto saxophone in the Reed School band. On Wednesday, in the second-to-last concert of his high school career — dads keep track of such things — Mike and his friends blew me away.
They weren’t just good. They were confident, capable musicians and I loved every minute and every measure of their performance.
A few feet – and a few years away – from the high school kids, the Reed School and middle school kids played their hearts out for parents with videocameras seemingly glued to their eyeballs.
Maybe these younger musicians weren’t as polished as their high school counterparts, but they will be.
Trust me on this one, I know.
After all, I’ve been the guy with the videocamera glued to his eyeball.
