Stamford Mayor says city will close on academy site next week

Mayor David Martin, speaking to the staff of the Stamford Public Schools, said the city will close on the purchase of the old Sacred Heart Academy site on Strawberry Hill Avenue on Sept. 5.

The deal has been in the works for months and has been written about extensively.

The city is buying the former parochial school, with Martin and the school district hoping to turn it into an elementary school to help relieve overcrowding in the schools.

However, an odd sort of political theater is playing out, as some Board of Finance and Board of Representative members allegedly want the Superintendent to prove the district needs the school even though both boards have approved the purchase of the property.
