Verizon ups early-termination fee for smartphones

Beginning next week, if you own a smartphone and want to switch before your contract is up, the penalty will be $350 — up from the $175 it used to be. In addition, consumers with Verizon smartphone contracts are complaining about erroneous data charges. Read more from the New York Times.

I’m definitely not a smartphone enthusiast. In fact, I barely remember at times to charge the cell phone I have, so I will need your help with this. Who has the best smartphone package for your money?

  1. The $350 fee only applies to new smartphones bought after 11/15/09. A Verizon representative just confirmed this and it says as much in the New York Times article. That’s not to say I don’t hate Verizon; I am a Verizon customer. But I already own my Blackberry so the fee hike doesn’t apply to me. The erroneous data charges are correct. Verizon charges you $1.99 if you accidentally hit one of their pre-programmed keys like Web browser and even if you hit cancel you are charged for 1 MB of “data.”
