What do you do to cut back on school supplies costs?

Even though I’m not a student anymore, I still get really excited about back to school shopping. When I was a kid, it was the one time of year that I got a ton of new supplies that I could organize, decorate and shove into my backpack. It was awesome. These days, I still get a little thrill every time I have to buy a new folder or binder or pens. It takes me back to when Mom, Brother and I would head out to the Oscars Drug store and get to check all the items off our classroom lists. My mom was the original Super Saver and when it came to school supplies she was a master of savings.

Here’s some tips I learned from her over the years and that you can use for your back to school shopping:

- Buy the plain colored folders instead of the one with cartoon characters. Those cartoons won’t be cool in a few months anyways. Plus, if you get the plain ones, then there is more room for creativity and you can encourage your kids to decorate their own folders.

- Re-use colored pencils. I know they look dingy and boring, but a quick coat of paint and sharpening them makes them good as new.

- Do you have a ton of crayons? Melt them down and turn them into fun shapes! It is a little more work, but it means your kids will have the coolest crayons in the classroom

- Same as the folders, get the plain binders with the plastic covering. Then your kids can change out what they want their binder to look like throughout the year. Plus, if they don’t destroy them, then you can use them again next year!

- Instead of buying the top brand Elmer’s Glue, get the generic brand. It will hold macaroni on paper and keep a couple extra bucks in your wallet.

- Finally, buy in bulk! You know every year you will need paper, so why not buy a lot of it?

What do you do to cut back on school supplies costs? Any helpful tips?

Trick or…?

There may be fewer treats this year on Halloween. According to Consumerist.com, families will be spending less on Halloween, especially candy. Read more.

I haven’t even started to think about Halloween, but I have two kids telling me they want to be Transformers (Bumblebee and Optimus Prime, to be exact). I’m guessing that people may get creative this year with what they give out as a way to save. What can trick-or-treaters expect when they ring your doorbell?

Plus, check out this post about making your own costume.

Your face could be on your M&M’s

Plain M&M's Purchased in 2005 in USA

If that’s important to you, then here’s a deal you should know about. Order 3 bags (7 oz.) of My M & M’s (with custom colors, words, or even your picture), and get a 3rd bag for free. Find out more on their Web site.

Custom M & M’s can make cheap wedding favors too. When I got married, my colors were navy blue and white, so I went to a candy store near where I lived that sold M & M’s in custom colors. I was able to get navy blue and white M & M’s. I then made little bags with some mesh fabric to put them in and tied them with ribbon, and printed labels that were attached. I’m not usually that crafty or creative, so I was rather proud of myself. Of course, I had 150 guests, so between my mom and I, it took a little while. A cheap alternative to ordering favors online, if you have the time.

25% off team prints and accessories at Jo-Ann

You might be able to save a little on gifts for your sports fan if you’re into sewing and crafts. They have a wide variety of teams in fleece, cotton, and some vinyl. They even have the Georgia Bulldogs (which probably only matters to me, but you would understand if you saw how my husband has arranged our living room to honor is alma mater). See more of what’s available at Jo-Ann’s Web site.
