The $350 fee only applies to new smartphones bought after 11/15/09. A Verizon representative just confirmed this and it says as much in the New York Times article. That's not to say I don't hate Verizon; I am a Verizon customer. But I already own my Blackberry so the fee hike doesn't apply to me. The erroneous data charges are correct. Verizon charges you $1.99 if you accidentally hit one of their pre-programmed keys like Web browser and even if you hit cancel you are charged for 1 MB of "data."

ANY LAYAWAY PLAN is the antithesis of saving and frugality. "Saving" is a winner trait. Layaway Plans are for Toys R Us's benefit only. You're doing your readers a disservice.

The holidays can be so hectic. I like choosing simple gifts such as candles or I personally make gift baskets. Refuse to go in to Debt and start planning now.

Sarah,

Debit cards are a real menace for young people. They check their balance at the ATM and think they have more money to spend, while other debit transactions are clearing. They'll end up bouncing and getting a huge overdraft fee for a $4.00 coffee and a bagel.

Some banks offer a online service to alert you to low balances on your account. With on-line banking you can set an alert to be sent to your email or a text message to your cell phone. Also Overdraft protction is offered by many banks. This service sometimes carries a fee, usually $10, however it it much lower than the $35 dollars you were charged.
