When Momo Jones scored 43 points to power the Iona College men’s basketball team to a 105-86 win over Canisius last Thursday, he tied former Gaels star Sean Green for the second-most points scored in a game in team history.
Green, who is in his second year as coach of the Convent of the Sacred Heart basketball team, poured in 43 points for the Gaels on March 3, 1991.
“I didn’t know he did that, it’s a great accomplishment,” said Green after I told him the news Thursday night. “As a scorer, when I played I was well aware of who the all-time single game scorer was at Iona.”
Warren Isaac owns Iona’s single-game scoring record. He scored 50 points in a game for the Gaels in 1964.
“The closest I came to Isaac’s record was scoring 47 points in an exhibition game,” said Green, who played for Indiana Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers and Utah Jazz after graduating from Iona in 1991. “My junior year I was intent on going out and scoring points, but my senior year it was all about winning. I didn’t get caught up in scoring records.”
Green is Iona’s fifth all-time leading scorer. Steve Burtt is Iona’s all-time leading scorer with 2,534 points.
