I covered the Greenwich High boys volleyball team today against the Fairfield co-op team at Fairfield Warde High School and left the match impressed with the Cardinals.
Greenwich, which opened the season with victories over St. Joseph, Trumbull and Danbury, improved to 4-0 with a 3-1 win over Fairfield. Senior co-captain Dan Chudy and senior John Beneville were rock solid at the net, registering 13 and 12 kills respectively. The formidable duo also posted four blocks for the Cardinals, who won the match by game scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20.
While Chudy and Beneville were taking care of business at the net, Patrick Hanrahan was setting them up. He finished with 22 assists and also provided strong serving, notching 10 service points.
Senior co-captain Jake Oe also served well for the Cardinals, who also flourished at passing the serve throughout. Junior Aidan Rafferty and Dexter Frisch also made their presence felt up front for the Cards, who narrowly missed making the FCIAC Tournament a year ago.
“This year we don’t want to leave it to chance,” said GHS coach Peter Georgiou, whose Cardinals missed the FCIAC playoffs last season by a tiebreaker. “It’s important for us to win every game in our league and we’re off to a good start.”
Greenwich showed the killer instinct of a good team Friday. After Fairfield won the second game, the Cardinals put the pedal to the metal and controlled the match, winning the final two game in convincing fashion.
The Cardinals are home Tuesday against rival Darien and will host Bridgeport on Wednesday. They will travel to New Canaan on Friday, before visiting Bassick on April 24.
