Friday, Greenwich High School senior quarterback Liam O’Neil was named one of 20 finalists in the state for the 2012 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.
On Monday, (Nov. 5) one male and one female finalist from each state will be named Wendy’s High School Heisman State Winners. Of those State Winners, 12 will be chosen as National Finalists and will compete for the National Winner title in New York City on Dec. 7. The national finalists will be featured during a ceremony on ESPN and will receive a gold medal along with a $2000 award for their respective high school.
One male and one female winner will be presented with a crystal Wendy’s High School Heisman trophy, a $500 gift certificate to Wendy’s and Wendy’s will donate $10,000 to the winner’s respective high school. The Wendy’s High School Heisman winners will also be recognized during the NCAA collegiate Heisman Trophy broadcast on ESPN on Dec. 8
In Connecticut, 393 athletes applied for the award, with the field being narrowed down to 20. O’Neil has thrown for five touchdowns in each of his last two games for the 6-0 Cardinals. He completed 12-of-19 passes for 219 yards and five touchdowns in Greenwich’s 63-22 win against Westhill last week and connected on 14-of-15 of his passes for 261 yards and five touchdowns in the Cards’ 56-6 rout of Bridgeport Central two weeks ago.
