Preseason honors piling up for Mazzilli

UConn's L.J. Mazzilli

UConn’s LJ Mazzilli, a Greenwich native, picked up his third preseason baseball All-America honor heading into the 2013 season on Thursday when he was named to the Baseball America All-America Third Team.
Earlier in the offseason, he was also named a preseason All-America First Team by Perfect Game and Collegiate Baseball News.
The Baseball America preseason team was voted on and selected by major league scouting directors, who make their selections based on performance, talent and professional potential.
Mazzilli was also honored as the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year and a member of the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team. Last season, he was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and ABCA Northeast Regional Second Team.  In the June 2012 MLB Draft, Mazzilli was taken 280th overall by the Minnesota Twins in the ninth round.
As a junior, Mazzilli led UConn in almost every major offensive category; including batting average (.339), doubles (19), home runs (9), runs (43) and RBI (38).
Mazzilli is one of two BIG EAST players chosen to the preseason All-America team along with Notre Dame third baseman Eric Jagielo, who is also on the third team.
