Despite heavy rain and thunder, approximately 50 junior sailors took to the water at the annual Law Trophy Regatta last week.
The Law Trophy Regatta is the first JSA regatta of the summer sailing season and was open to sailors who qualified for JSA Championships the previous season or who applied separately and were approved to compete by the JSA.
Rough seas and looming storm clouds greeted sailors at the Indian Harbor Yacht Club as they rigged for the first day of the regatta.
After a short on-shore postponement, sailors were sent out in the rain to attempt to race but the wind never picked up enough for a full race and storms seemed imminent, and after about three hours on the water with no races, the sailors were sent in for the day.
On the second day, with no weather-related delays and a moderate southern breeze, there was enough wind for Lasers and Laser Radials to finish two races and the C420s to finish three.
The Larchmont Yacht Club team of Matt Kaplan and Nick Schlegel took home first place in the C420 division, while Greenwich resident Ethan Stark of Indian Harbor Yacht Club won the Laser Standard division and Richie Gordon of Cedar Point Yacht Club won the Laser Radial division.
