Greenwich resident Gavin West, 10, qualified to race in national championship North Carolina in the 800 and 1500.

This weekend Icahn Stadium at the US Track & Field Youth Northeast Regional qualifier for the Junior Olympics West ran the 1500 in 5:16, taking 15 seconds off his previous best two weeks earlier.

Two of the top 9-10 boys in the nation hail from New Haven. Azaan Dawson, who placed 2nd, recently won the national indoor championship in both the 800 and 1500. Caleb Bolton, the winner, may win the outdoor championship.

West, a rising 5th grader at Old Greenwich Elementary, is new to track. He’s involved in a bunch of local Greenwich sports. He swims and plays water polo year-round, plays soccer and football in the fall and spring, and this past spring ran track once-a-week.
