A wealth of Greenwich High School athletes earned spots on the All-FCIAC team for the fall season in their respective sports.
Greenwich boys soccer stars Patrick Santini, Jonathan Palmer, Will Gittings, Mateo Gowland and Santiago Irigoyen were each All-FCIAC First Team selections. The Cardinals finished the season 19-1-2, won the FCIAC championship and advanced to the semifinal round of the CIAC Class LL Tournament, where they were edged by Glastonbury, 2-1.
Santini and Gittings were two of the Cardinals’ leading scorers, Gowland was a dynamic playmaker in the midfield, Palmer helped anchor the defense and Irigoyen was rock solid in goal. All five players are seniors. Also for the Cards, senior Sebastian Hickman and junior Paul Quiroga were named to the All-FCIAC West squad.
The Greenwich High girls volleyball team won its first-ever FCIAC title and senior Mirei Kato helped lead the way. Kato was named to the All-FCIAC First Team. She recorded 17 kills, 15 digs, six assists and three blocks in the Cardinals’ 3-2 win over Staples in the championship game of the FCIAC Tournament.
GHS coach Steve Lapham was named Coach of the Year by the FCIAC. Senior Xanthi Katsigiannis was an All-FCIAC Second Team selection, senior Jessie Schelz made the Third Team and senior Heather Desino earned Honorable Mention.
Greenwich’s field hockey team, which advanced to the semifinal round of the Class LL Tournament, is represented by senior forward/playmaker Sydney Cole on the All-FCIAC First team and senior defender Lizzy Trotta. Sarah Stinebaugh and seniors Nicole Graham (defender) and goalie Freddie Bancroft were All-West selections. Paige Mautner received Honorable Mention.
A strong sophomore season by Greenwich’s Amy Wyle earned her a spot on the girls cross country All-FCIAC First Team. GHS senior Mark Jarombek made Second Team honors on the All-FCIAC boys cross country team.
