Metro North woes continue

|

A freight derailment early Friday morning in the Bronx has damaged track and equipment. There is no estimate yet on when service on Metro North’s Hudson Line will be restored, officials said at midday.

The railroad posted photos and video of the scene, to show the amount of repair work that lies ahead. That situation doesn’t affect New Haven Line riders, but…

The extreme heat has required that all Metro North trains reduce speed, creating 10-15 minute delays. The overhead catenary system and the “shoe” that grips it, can be affected by the heat, Metro North spokesman Aaron Donovan said earlier.

This is on top of a transformer fire in Milford overnight that cancelled some trains into Grand Central Terminal, and caused delays on others. For the earliest commuter trains, diesel engines replaced the electric ones though power was mostly restored by 7 .a.m.
