Police say an East Hartford man died Friday morning after his minivan collided with a tractor trailer.

Authorities said 43-year-old Fernando Damasco-Bautista died at Norwalk Hospital after the crash.

Investigators said Bautista was driving a 1998 Plymouth Voyager northbound on the Route 7 connector around 3:25 a.m. Friday when he collided with a Mack tractor trailer driven by a 54-year-old Norwalk resident.

The truck had been traveling westbound on Grist Mill Road and was preparing to turn left onto the southbound lanes of the connector. Police said the truck was transporting U.S. Mail and that the driver was taken to a hospital with leg pain.

State Police closed the connector for more than four hours Friday morning, diverting traffic onto Main Avenue to access the Merritt Parkway during the morning rush.

Investigators said the traffic signal was working and that the intersection was properly lit at the time of the crash, but they said that there was a sheen upon the roadway surface even though the roadway had been salted before the accident.

Norwalk police are continuing to investigate the crash and anyone who witnessed or has information about this accident is urged to contact the Norwalk Police Department by calling (203) 854-3111. Anonymous Internet tips can be sent to the Norwalk Police website and anonymous text tips can be submitted by typing “NPD” into the text field, followed by the message, and sending it to CRIMES (274637).
