John Merrick just made birdie on the par-5 sixth hole (after reaching the green in two and missing an 8-foot eagle putt) and is alone in first again at the Travelers. He’s 12-under.
Hunter Mahan, who usually plays this course like he designed it himself, is also getting hot. He had five birdies on his opening nine holes, including kick-ins at 16, 17 and 18.
