A rougher morning

For what it’s worth, completely uncontrolled and out-of-context numbers:

Yesterday, with most of the golfers left on the course, they played a combined 1,059 holes, and they played them a combined 65-under-par.

Those same 78 golfers — well, the 72 who hadn’t finished yesterday — came back today to play their last 336 holes*. They played them a combined 18-over-par.

*-It doesn’t add up because Fran Marrello, who was 6-over through nine, withdrew last night.

Second round slated for 12:45 p.m. start; Mediate withdraws

A few news items from the Travelers Championship:

First, the second round is expected to begin today at 12:45 p.m., with the first groups starting on both tees between then and 2:45 pm. Those are the same golfers who are finishing their first rounds this morning.

That means the “afternoon” wave of tee times will begin at 5:30 p.m. today. It seems unlikely that the second round will be completed before darkness today but they should get some golf in.

Also, Rocco Mediate has withdrawn from the event with an elbow injury. Mediate was 4-over par through nine holes in his first round Friday morning.

First round resumes, Moore and Romero set pace

We’re back here in Cromwell for the resumption of the first round of the Travelers Championship.

Ryan Moore and Andres Romero have posted 6-under 64′s. Both men began their first rounds Thursday.

“I hit a great shot out of the fairway bunker on 17 to about eight feet above the hole and then stuck it in there to about three-and-a-half, four feet on 18,” Moore said. “So it was obviously a nice way to finish the round and a nice way to be able to relax and feel good for the rest of the day and see what happens.”

Tag Ridings is the hottest of the second wave, going 4-under through his first nine holes this morning.

The weather forecast doesn’t exactly look terrific, but if it keeps on misting as it is now they’ll get in some golf today.

Marrello steps out

Fran Marrello of Plymouth, one of only two state players in the field, withdrew this afternoon with a reported back injury after shooting 6-over-par over nine holes today. Marrello, head pro at Canaan Country Club, earned his way into the field last month by winning the Connecticut PGA’s Spring Stroke Play tournament.

That leaves J.J. Henry to carry the state’s banner.

Restart, indeed (we hope)

Groups that were already on the course will resume play at 5:45. The afternoon groups will begin play at 6 p.m., which will give them about two and a half hours of daylight. Those afternoon groups are starting six hours late. For everyone else, the delay is a bit longer, 6:17.

The PGA says the 6 hour, 17 minute delay is the longest on the tour this season.

Edit: Strike that: It’s pouring again. The plan is to push things back another 15 minutes, for a 6 p.m. restart, and a 6:15 start for the players who were originally scheduled to go off at noon. That obviously makes the delay 6:32.

Edit2: Strike that: Another half-hour on top of the 15 minutes. Scheduled 6:30 p.m. restart. The afternooners go off at 6:45. We can only hope. The delay would be 7 hours, 2 minutes.

Restart, maybe?

The rain has slowed, the driving range is open for the pros, and rules officials are headed out to the course to check the conditions. We could be getting closer to a start time.
