College hoops season is underway. Kind of.
Technically, the first practice isn’t until Saturday, but with the Jimmy V Classic charity dinner Wednesday and the annual Husky Run Thursday, it feels like we’re in full swing.
Here’s my story about the relationship between Kevin Ollie and Geno Auriemma. Notes and quotes from the event are below:
*Tyler Olander (sprained ankle) is “in good health,” according to Ollie. The coach also added that Shabazz Napier (foot) has worked out in the pool, but not on the treadmill or basketball court. He’s expected to participate in Saturday’s practice.
* Ollie on his similarities with Jim Calhoun: “You can make a suit out of the same material 15 different ways and coach (Calhoun) and I have the same material. It’s hard work, defense, understandiing that the group is greater than the individual. They’re going to understand that. If not, they’re going to be sitting right there beside me and they’ll get the picture real quick.”
*Ollie on Glen Miller’s promotion to associate head coach: “I just felt a comfort level with him. I have a comfort level with George (Blaney), too. I think everybody understands my focus and I wanted to keep my team together. I had to reshuffle a couple of spots there but I think Glen will be a great person on my side in case I get thrown out the game. Hopefully that doesn’t happen.”
*Georgetown coach John Thompson III on his father, the Hoyas head coach emeritus: “Does my dad sit in film sessions? No. Is he a part of game-planning? No. Is he a part of any staff meetings? No. Does he come and watch practice and say why the hell are you doing that? Yes.”
