UConn 57, Harvard 49

by:

A furious 15-2 run in the opening minutes and a late second half surge propelled UConn to a 57-49 victory over Harvard Friday night at Gampel Pavilion.

STAR OF THE GAME: DeAndre Daniels, playing with a sore back, poured in a career high 23 points. At one time, Daniels had 23 of UConn’s 37. The versatile 6-foot-8 sophomore hit from outside, penetrated to the basket, scored in the paint and outran Harvard on the break.

KEY TO THE WIN: UConn’s defense was intense from start-to-finish, forcing the Crimson into `8 turnovers. Harvard managed just 13 assists.

*Shabazz Napier scored just six points, but he did everything else — rebound, distribute, you know it — to ignite a crucial second half run. Napier’s first basket—a 3-pointer from the left wing—came with just 7:35 to play. He pulled in a team-high seven rebounds and dished out nine assists.

*In his first career start, Enosch Wolf failed to record a rebound in 20 minutes. He did, however, make a few hustle plays — diving for a loose ball, blocking an early shot in the paint — that helped UConn to its blistering 15-2 start. Coming off the bench for the first time this season, Tyler Olander was relatively unproductive. He totaled just four points and two boards in 20 minutes.

*Harvard entered Friday shooting 43.2 percent from 3-point range, which ranked 10th in the nation. The Crimson, in an early 13-point hole, shot its way back into the game with five longballs in the final 14 minutes of the half. The Crimson didn’t hit another from downtown.

Halftime: UConn 27, Harvard 24

by:

Despite a 15-2 run to start the game, UConn took a 27-24 lead into the locker room Friday versus Harvard.

The Crimson took six minutes to score its first point, but quickly went on  a 12-0 run to make it a one-possession game.

DeAndre Daniels, who has been held in single-digits the past five games, scored 15 first half points, scoring from the perimeter, on the fastbreak and on dribble penetration. Shabazz Napier was held scoreless (a pattern in the first month of the season).

Although UConn shot 11-for-20 from the field, it committed seven turnovers. Harvard went 5-for-10 from 3-point range.

In his first career start, Enosch Wolf had four points and zero rebounds. He made a few hustle plays — diving for a loose ball, blocking an early shot in the paint — that helped UConn to its blistering 15-2 start.

Pregame Notes: Harvard at UConn

by:

Enosch Wolf has apparently been rewarded for his 12-point, nine-rebound effort versus N.C. State.

He’ll get the start tonight in place of struggling center Tyler Olander, who has 21 rebounds and 21 fouls in his past six games. Olander has not scored 10 points or grabbed 10 rebounds in a single game this season. In fact, a UConn player has reached double-figure rebounds just once (DeAndre Daniels had 10 versus New Hampshire).

Also of note:

*DeAndre Daniels (back spasms) is warming up and stretching with an hour remaining until tipoff. It seems as though he’ll give it a go tonight.

*R.J. Evans (sternalclavicular sprain) seemed a bit limited athletically versus N.C. State. Barring any unforseen setbacks, the redshirt senior will play tonight.

WHAT TO WATCH

Through seven games, Harvard ranks 10th in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (43.2 %)…After a 15-point outburst versus Stony Brook, Niels Giffey has scored just two points in 49 minutes over the past two games…Enosch Wolf is 17-for-25 from the field (68 percent) thus far. There’s a chance Wolf (or Giffey) could earn the start tonight if DeAndre Daniels (back spasms)  can’t go…Daniels, a versatile 6-foot-8 scorer, hasn’t hit double-digits in five consecutive games and Olander has yet to post either 10 points or 10 boards this season.
