UConn freshman Omar Calhoun was named Big East Rookie of the Week after averaging 19.5 points on 66.6 percent shooting from the field in the Huskies’ two wins this past week.
Calhoun, a 6-foot-5 guard, went off for a career-high 22 points against winless Maryland Eastern Shore, and followed that up with a 17-point effort versus Fordham. For the season, Calhoun is averaging 10.9 points and 3.6 rebounds. He’s feasted on weaker opponents — Fordham and Maryland Eastern Shore — but has struggled versus the nationally-ranked teams (Michigan State, N.C. State).
In addition to Calhoun, sophomore guard Ryan Boatright was named to the Big East weekly honor roll. Boatright has been on a tear of late, averaging 21 points on 68.5 percent shooting from the field over UConn’s past three games.
The Huskies (9-2) are off until Saturday’s matchup with Washington. Here’s an analysis of UConn at the break.
