Zone offense has been a struggle at times, but in big moments — particularly Wednesday’s 66-58 win over Syracuse — the Huskies have sliced the 2-3, creating open looks on the perimeter.
On Saturday, UConn (17-6, 7-4 Big East) faces the lost art of man-to-man defense. Some comments from Kevin Ollie regarding Saturday’s noon game:
*Ollie on a frontcourt of DeAndre Daniels and Niels Giffey: “We’re thin, so everything is an option to me right now. We get in foul trouble, anything happens, we’re going to have to make adjustments. You might see Leon (Tolksdorf) at the five, you just never know. I mean…seriously, we just have to win the game. I’m going to put the guys out there that just play hard and play hard for this university.”
*Ollie on a Big East regular season title: “We’re just trying to play basketball. I’m not trying to put pressure on myself or the guys. We’re playing excellent basketball and hopefully it keeps up. When they turn off Gampel or turn off the XL, so be it. We’re going to play hard and be like a Connecticut team and play with pride.”
*Ollie on Omar Calhoun: “What I’ve seen with him is improvement on defense. He played Syracuse forward (C.J.) Fair the majority of the game. His defense has been expanding a lot, and that’s the growth I’d like to see with him. I know we talk about the big shots, the media sees that and the fans see that, and I know you are all basketball people, but I see the every day evolution of his defense getting better. And his rebounding getting better, because I challenge him a lot in those areas and he’s been responding.”
