As suspected, Niels Giffey suffered a fractured right index finger during UConn’s 61-56 loss to Cincinnati Saturday.
X-Rays confirmed the break, the UConn athletic department announced Sunday. Giffey, who has played well at the four and five positions since Enosch Wolf was indefinitely suspended on Feb. 11, will see an orthopedic specialist to determine the best course of treatment.
Just speculating here: It seems highly unlikely that Giffey will play again in 2013. UConn has two games remaining — at South Florida Wednesday and home versus Providence Saturday — and the injury occurred on his shooting hand. In many cases, surgery is required.
Shabazz Napier, who missed the first game of his collegiate career Saturday, was in for treatment Sunday, according to a team spokesperson. He is “still in discomfort and still in a walking boot.” Napier will be evaluated day-to-day.
