St. Vincent’s outpatient facilities, college remain closed

by:

Though St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport reopened its urgent care walk-in center in Monroe earlier today, many of its other facilities will remain closed until further notice.

All of the hospital’s outpatient areas and services will be closed tomorrow, with the exception of its Radiation Oncology Department and Ambulatory Infusion Center, due to storm-related issues. The outpatient services that will be closed include all imaging in the Radiology Department, all elective surgery, and St. Vincent’s Family Health Center.

St. Vincent’s College will be closed.

The offices for Hall-Brooke Community Residential Services and St. Vincent’s Behavioral Health “The Center” Outpatient facility in Bridgeport are also closed tomorrow.
Staff should check with Hall Brooke supervisors in the morning regarding the accessibility and opening of Lois Street in Norwalk and the Fairfield facility.
Also, The St.Vincent’s Special Needs Program at the Feroleto Center in Trumbull and the Adult Day programs in Norwalk and Stratford–B-3 and Family Center will also be closed tomorrow.

St. Vincent’s Urgent Care Walk-in Center in Monroe will be open, and more information will be forthcoming regarding the walk-ins located in Bridgeport, Fairfield and Shelton, and St. Vincent’s Wound Healing Center in Trumbull. Anyone with an immediate health issues should proceed to the emergency department of St. Vincent’s, which wil remain open.

For more information regarding rescheduling of appointments, patients are asked to call the appropriate department or the main line at 203-576-6000.

St. Vincent’s staff should call the main line and ask for Nursing Service or visit the website for more information on rides or carpooling.

Greater Bridgeport Transit Services will not operate Monday

by:

This just in from Doug Holcomb, general manager of Greater Bridgeport Transit Services:

“Because of the continuing clean-up effort following the storm and the condition of many of the roads in the region, all Greater Bridgeport Transit Services in the Bridgeport Region are canceled for Monday, February 11th. Riders can visit www.gogbt.com for updates and information regarding the return to normal service.”

Metro-North official: Expect half of normal Monday morning rush from New Haven to Stamford

by:

Latest MTA update:

Waterbury Branch train service remains suspended due to the severity of the winter storm.  No bus service will be provided on account of adverse road conditions.

New Haven Line Service is now operating on or close to schedule. We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced as a result of this incident.

Previously:

This just in from Metro-North Railroad spokeswoman Marjorie Anders:

“Normal weekday schedules will be in effect (Monday) on the entire Hudson and Harlem lines, as well as on the New Haven Line between Stamford and Grand Central Terminal.

Between New Haven and Stamford, Metro-North is prepared to provide about half of its normal Monday morning rush hour service. Train service will resume on the Danbury and New Canaan branches, but not the Waterbury branch.

A schedule will be posted later tonight at mta.info.

Crews continue working to remove deep snow from yards in New Haven and Bridgeport and to clear the track switches that allow trains to change from one track to another. About 45 maintenance of way workers from NYC Transit rode a diesel train to Bridgeport and New Haven yards to assist in the clean up effort. Another crew of 45 workers will arrive at about 9:30 pm to continue working in the yards.

There are two jet engine snow blowers at work and CDOT has sent two front end loaders and several triple axle trucks to remove snow from the yards.

In addition, deep snow has to be removed manually from the roof of each train car so that the pantographs can go up and down. (The pantographs are the mechanical arms that capture electricity from the overhead catenary wires.)

People may notice that Metro-North Railroad will be running empty trains up and down the line this evening to loosen the wires and pantographs and test the switches. These trains cannot carry passengers because of the uncertainty of conditions along the right of way and we do not want to strand any customers. These test trains will help the railroad assess the conditions and better plan tomorrow’s service.

Among many challenges in providing service is getting train crews to their work locations. Many local roads where MNR crews live are impassable.

MNR has been told that CDOT is working with the National Guard is helping to clear roads in and out of MNR facilities, to clear a path from 1-95 to yards, so that crews can report to work.

It is anticipated that many people who normally rely on MNR to get to work will be unable to reach their home train stations because many local roads remain impassable. MNR expects that some 10 trains instead of the usual 15 in the AM peak will suffice without excessive crowding. The railroad will be monitoring conditions throughout the morning.”

Freezing rain advisory issued

by:

Just what we don’t need: a freezing rain advisory from 3 to 9 a.m. Monday.

The National Weather Service has posted the advisory for both Fairfield and New Haven Counties.

Freezing rain, possibly mixed with snow and sleet could make travel hazardous late tonight and through Monday morning.

Untreated roads will become slick and icy, but should improve late Monday morning as temperatures rise and the mix changes to rain.

In Litchfield County, a winter weather advisory has been issued from 4 a.m. to noon.

The NWS says a combination of snow, sleet and freezing rain is likely there. Snowfall will be less than an inch.

Finch: No school or clean streets until Friday

by:

BRIDGEPORT — Mayor Bill Finch said he doesn’t expect to have all city streets cleared of snow until Friday, or maybe even later. Because of this, the mayor said he doubts the city can reopen many schools until late in the week.

“It’s going to take us a week to get all the streets cleaned,” said Finch, who was at the city’s Emergency Operations Center Sunday afternoon. “By Tuesday, the latest Wednesday, we’ll get the main streets and snow emergency streets.”

Secondary streets will follow and then the city will tackle small residential streets, cul-de-sacs and dead-end streets.

Finch said one of the biggest problems has been the large number of abandoned cars blocking city streets and forcing plows to waste time backing up out of a street. “They’ve reduced our efficientcy by 40 to 50 percent or more,” the mayor said. When cars are following the plow it’s even worse, the mayor said. Then police have to be called in to back everyone out safely so the plow can go on its way.

State workers get another ‘snow day’ Monday

by:

“Non-essential” state employees are getting another snow day off Monday by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy,

Malloy is asking all nonessential state employees to stay home on Monday as the clean up effort continues.

However, evening and midnight shift employees should report to work as normal on Monday.

“Getting streets clear and making them safer for everyone is a priority, so I am asking nonessential state employees to stay home tomorrow,” said  Malloy. “I understand that everyone wants to get back to normal as quickly as possible. Crews are working around the clock to accomplish that goal. But the last thing we need at this point is a typical morning rush hour commute. Traffic build-up will only delay the effort to clear our roads.”

The “non-essential employees” were also given Friday off because of the impending blizzard.

New Canaan stations out of gas

by:

Mobil and Gulf gas stations, both on South Avenue in New Canaan, ran out of gas this weekend. Due to the severe weather, employees said the transfer stations were unable to deliver Saturday, but they expect to be up and running either later this evening or Monday morning.
