Weather updates for Fairfield County Connecticut

Damp, rainy week ahead

|

Remember how you learned in history class that the Colonists’ situation in their war against the British was looking bleak just before Independence Day?

Well, history repeats itself.

The forecast for the next three days is cloudy and humid with a high temperature barely breaking 80 degrees. There is a chance of rain or even a thunderstorm every day, and we could pick up as much as a half-inch of rain today, Tuesday and Wednesday.

And then, on the Glorious Fourth the sun will break out. It will be a great day to be outdoors and to enjoy the holiday.

After that? Well, you also learned in history class that merely declaring independence from Britain didn’t change anything. The Continental Army still had some gloomy days and bad weather ahead (Valley Forge, for example).

Think of that on the weekend, when it is supposed to rain again.

And remember how the whole thing turned out. It will be sunny again. But not tomorrow. Or the next day.

  • Today: Showers and thunderstorms likely. Cloudy, with a high near 78. Southeast wind 5 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly between 10 and 11 p.m., with areas of fog. Otherwise, cloudy, with a low around 70. South wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Tuesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Cloudy, with a high near 80. South wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Tuesday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Cloudy, with a low around 71. South wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.
  • Wednesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. Southwest wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
  • Wednesday Night: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.
  • Independence Day: Partly sunny, with a high near 83.
  • Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71.
  • Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 84.

Today is not the best beach day, obviously, but besides the clouds and the chance of thunderstorms, the National Weather Service is warning of unusually strong rip tides.
